2021 'People of Peace' adult award winner

Debbie Hicks

Debbie is a winner of the 2021 adult award.

An extract from her nomination form said: "Debbie’s daughter, Timmaree, was diagnosed with orbital rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare form of eye cancer in 2006 and passed away two years later at the age of 9. While staying long periods of time in the hospital, Timmaree would paint rocks and give them to family, friends and hospital staff. To honor Timmaree's memory, Debbie started to create rock painting kits to give to other sick children in the hospital. She would raise money to put together rock kits by hosting bake sales, garage sales and restaurant fundraisers. Every month, Debbie delivers rock kits to CHOC (Children's Hospital of Orange County) and has delivered over 18,000 rock painting kits since 2009. She also leads Team Timmaree Rocks, at the annual CHOC Walk in the Park Fundraiser at Disneyland where she has helped to raise $260,000 for the hospital. In addition to doing work for Team Timmaree, she is the director of an independent living service where she helps adults with developmental disabilities learn important life skills. Debbie has proven not only to be resilient in challenging times like these, but is always putting others before herself as she is continuing her work to improve the lives of others."

"It’s a wonderful idea that The Salvation Army is going to cultivate youngsters in the precious soil of Strawberry Field."
